California rules that protect military kids
- Enroll before you arrive. With orders in hand your child counts as a resident of the district. Schools must accept online enrollment, and you have 10 days after arrival to show proof of address.
- Unofficial records are enough to start. The school has to enroll your child and request the official file.
- 30 days for shots. You get a grace period to meet California's immunization rules.
- Placement carries over. Honors, AP, gifted and special education services are honored at first.
- Stay put if you move again. A military child can remain in the same school after a local move.
- Seniors graduate on time. Schools must waive or substitute courses where they reasonably can.
Kindergarten requires turning 5 by September 1. Transitional kindergarten is free for children who turn 4 by September 1.
