The gates
- Las Posas Gate (Gate 3) is open 24 hours. It sits where Las Posas Road meets Highway 1.
- Mugu Road Gate (Gate 2) is open weekdays from 0600 to 1700, off Naval Air Road.
Day workers can split between the two. Outside those hours everyone funnels through Las Posas, so swing shift and weekend duty mean one line.
Where it slows down
- The Las Posas Road and Highway 1 interchange at the start and end of the workday.
- Lewis Road and Las Posas Road. Both are two lanes through working farmland. Tractors and produce trucks set the pace in season.
- The Conejo Grade on US 101. The hill between Newbury Park and Camarillo backs up in both rush hours and stops for any crash.
- Pacific Coast Highway from Malibu. It is beautiful and fragile. Slides and fires have closed it before. Have a second route.
Test it at the hour you would drive it. Do the run once at 0600 and once at 1630 before you sign a lease or write an offer.
Without a car
No city bus route reaches Point Mugu. Gold Coast Transit Route 23 serves the Port Hueneme side.
The Ventura County Transportation Commission lists two vanpool providers, CalVans at 866-655-5444 and Enterprise at 800-826-9675, and a rideshare matching line at 800-438-1112. Vanpools need about five riders who live 15 miles or more from work.
No shuttle runs between Point Mugu and Port Hueneme. The two sites are about ten miles apart.
Point Mugu or Port Hueneme?
If your command is at Point Mugu, Camarillo is close and Ventura is far. If you are at Port Hueneme it is the other way around. Couples split between the two sites usually land in south Oxnard or Port Hueneme, 15 to 25 minutes from both. Compare all eight cities on the where to live table.
