What it is

San Nicolas Island is the most remote of California's Channel Islands. The Navy owns all of it. It became part of Naval Base Ventura County in 2004 and is one of the base's three operating sites, with Port Hueneme and Point Mugu.

  • Where: a little over 60 miles offshore from Point Mugu
  • Size: about 13,370 acres, roughly nine miles long and four miles wide
  • Runway: about 10,000 feet
  • Access: closed to the public. You need orders or permission to land.

What happens there

The island is the outer anchor of the Point Mugu Sea Range, 36,000 square miles of ocean and airspace where the Navy tests missiles and trains the fleet. The Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division runs the range from Point Mugu.

San Nicolas is covered in tracking radar, telemetry and optical gear. Targets and missiles are launched from it, and it can stand in for a ship in a test. The airfield and a barge landing keep it supplied.

Jobs include air traffic control and airfield operations, range instrumentation and the support work that keeps a remote site running. Military, civilians and contractors all work there.

Getting there

  • People fly from Point Mugu on scheduled contract passenger flights. Ask your command how to get a seat.
  • Cargo comes by barge when the sea is calm, or by aircraft.
  • The control tower keeps weekday hours.

Weather cancels flights. Pack as if you may stay a day longer than planned.

Life on the island

Most people work on San Nicolas in stretches and go home between them. One Navy air traffic controller described working there 4 to 11 days in a row.

Ask your sponsor what the island has right now for a store, medical care and cell coverage. We could not confirm those from an official source.

Where your family lives

We found no family housing on San Nicolas. Lodging there is for official stays only, and people who work on the island go home to the mainland between shifts. Confirm your own orders with your command.

Because flights leave from Point Mugu, most island workers live within a short drive of the Las Posas Gate. Camarillo, south Oxnard and Port Hueneme all fit. The Point Mugu commute page has drive times from 14 towns.

Ask your admin office how your orders handle housing allowance. We found no official rule specific to the island, and we will not guess at your pay.

Home near the flight lineAdam will find you a place close to Point Mugu, so the trip home starts the minute you land.

Wildlife and history

  • Seals and sea lions. As many as 170,000 California sea lions, elephant seals and harbor seals use the island in breeding season.
  • Rare animals. The island fox, the island night lizard, sea otters and the western snowy plover all live here. The base won a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service conservation award in January 2026 for its work with them.
  • The Lone Woman. The NicoleƱo people lived here. One woman was left behind in 1835 when the rest were taken to the mainland, and she lived alone until 1853. Her story became the novel Island of the Blue Dolphins.
