Thousands of civilians work at Point Mugu and Port Hueneme. Here is who hires, what the jobs are, how to apply and how spouses and veterans get a leg up.
Who hires
Naval Base Ventura County calls itself the number one employer in the county. About 4,700 federal civilians and 3,100 contractors work across the two sites.

The kinds of jobs
- Engineers and scientists. Aerospace, electrical, mechanical and computer engineers. Computer scientists, mathematicians and physicists.
- Technicians and trades. Electronics, test and range support, electricians and utilities.
- Business roles. Logistics, contracting, finance and program management.
- Service jobs. Child and youth programs, lodging, fitness and food service.
Most technical jobs require US citizenship and the ability to hold a security clearance. That is a real edge for people leaving active duty with a current clearance.
How to apply
- Start on USAJOBS Nearly every appropriated fund job posts there. Search by location for Point Mugu or Port Hueneme.
- Check the command career pages NAVAIR Careers has a Point Mugu page and an events calendar. NSWC Port Hueneme Division and NAVFAC each run their own careers pages with student and entry level programs.
- Look at NAF jobs MWR and child care jobs post on USAJOBS and the NBVC careers page. The local personnel office is in Building 41 at Port Hueneme, 805-982-3108. These need the NAF application form and not only a resume.
- Work the career fairs Fleet and Family Support runs one each fall and spring at the Bee-Hive Gym at Port Hueneme. The spring 2026 fair drew 73 employers.

Spouses and veterans
- Military spouse preference. On federal jobs you can claim it once per PCS and you must be among the best qualified. On NAF jobs it covers most positions in the same commuting area, starting 30 days before your sponsor reports.
- Noncompetitive appointment. Agencies may hire a military spouse without competition. You still apply through the announcement.
- Veterans preference. Five points for qualifying service, ten for a service connected disability or a Purple Heart.
- Veterans Recruitment Appointment. Lets an agency hire eligible veterans without competition up to GS-11.

Beyond the fence
The county's other large employers include Amgen in Thousand Oaks, the County of Ventura, the Port of Hueneme, the hospital systems, and manufacturers such as Haas Automation and Procter and Gamble in Oxnard. More on that is on the getting out page.
