What happens at Point Mugu
Point Mugu is the airfield and test range side of Naval Base Ventura County. It covers about 4,500 acres with two runways, the longer one 11,000 feet. Offshore, the Point Mugu Sea Range gives the Navy 36,000 square miles of instrumented ocean and airspace to test missiles and aircraft.
Who works here:
- Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division, the largest civilian employer on the site
- Air Test and Evaluation Squadron 30, which clears and monitors the range
- The Airborne Command and Control and Logistics Wing and its E-2 Hawkeye squadrons
- Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 55
- Unmanned aircraft units flying Triton and Fire Scout
- Coast Guard Air Station Ventura, commissioned in November 2024 with MH-60 Jayhawk helicopters
- Next door, the California Air National Guard's 146th Airlift Wing and its C-130s

Point Mugu housing on base
Liberty Military Housing runs four neighborhoods at Point Mugu. The Point Mugu leasing office is at 805-986-0928.

On base homes feed the Ocean View School District for kindergarten through eighth grade and the Oxnard Union High School District after that. Waitlists are normal, so call the Housing Service Center at 805-982-4321 the day you get orders.
Single sailors check in at the unaccompanied housing office in Building 23 on 7th Street, 805-989-0406. It is staffed around the clock for arrivals.

The good life here
- Family Beach. A stretch of sand on base, open only to ID card holders.
- Surf. The breaks on base are reserved for active duty and retirees most of the year.
- Point Mugu State Park. Five miles of shoreline and 70 miles of trails start just south of the base.
- Weather. January highs average 66 and August highs 74. May and June mornings start gray and clear by lunch.
Things to check before you sign
- Aircraft noise. It is an active airfield. Visit on a weekday and ask about the base's noise contours.
- Flood and tsunami zones. The plain around the base is low. Look up any address on the state and FEMA maps.
- Farm traffic. The roads to the gate are two lanes through working fields. Tractors are part of the commute.
