Everything You Need for Day One on Base
Naval Base Ventura County is two main sites ten miles apart. Here is which gate to use, where to check in, who is stationed where and the numbers to save in your phone.
Two bases, one command
NBVC was formed in 2000 when the Navy merged Construction Battalion Center Port Hueneme and Naval Air Station Point Mugu. San Nicolas Island, 60 miles offshore, came with it.
Port Hueneme is the Seabee side. The Navy opened it in 1942 to train and ship out its new Construction Battalions. It has the only deep water port between Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay, the only commissary on the installation and the main Navy Exchange.
Point Mugu is the airfield and test range side. Two runways, the E-2 Hawkeye community and a 36,000 square mile sea range for weapons testing.
The two sites are about ten miles apart and no shuttle runs between them. Know which side your command is on before you pick a place to live. It changes your gate, your commute and often your school district.
Gates and hours
| Site | Gate | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Port Hueneme | Knott Gate (Ventura Road at Sunkist Street) | Open 24 hours |
| Port Hueneme | Victoria Gate | Weekdays 0600 to 1700 |
| Port Hueneme | Pleasant Valley Road Gate | Weekdays 0600 to 1700 |
| Point Mugu | Las Posas Gate (Gate 3) | Open 24 hours |
| Point Mugu | Mugu Road Gate (Gate 2) | Weekdays 0600 to 1700 |
Old hands still call Knott Gate by its former name, Sunkist Gate. Bard and Goodspeed gates at Port Hueneme and the Main Road Gate at Point Mugu are closed until further notice. Commercial trucks use the commercial lanes on weekdays from 0700 to 1430.
Arriving late or on a weekend? Only Knott Gate and Las Posas Gate are open. Gate hours change, so confirm with the base operator before a late arrival.
Where to check in
- Point Mugu commands: the Quarterdeck in Building 1 on Main Road, 805-989-7209.
- Port Hueneme Seabee commands: Building 1000 during working hours. After hours, the bachelor enlisted quarters.
- Everyone: ask your gaining command for a sponsor before you leave your old duty station. A good sponsor saves you a week of guessing.
